Soundview Oyster Reef Installation.
In partnership with Billion Oyster Project, Witness Tree Media created visual stories of their largest oyster reef installation project at the confluence of the Bronx River and the East River in the South Bronx. After loading loose oyster shells and gabions filled with live oysters into shipping containers at the Red Hook shipping terminal, the containers were transported up the East River to the installation site in Soundview. The loose oyster shells would be the foundation of the oyster reef and the gabions would form the structure of the reef.
The containers filled with loose oyster shells were emptied onto a barge and the loose shells were dropped into the water at specific locations. Then a crane lifted the oyster gabions out of the containers and placed them directly on top of the loose oyster shell foundations. Since the installation, crews from Billion Oyster Project have been monitoring the site to better understand the success of the project and make adjustments for future oyster reef restoration installations.
