White River National Forest Logging.
The climate emergency is negatively impacting forest ecosystems in a variety of ways including the amplification of natural processes. The most recent native mountain pine beetle infestation has killed millions of acres of Rocky Mountain lodgepole pine forests all at once over a short period of time. The sudden loss of lodgepole pine forests has significantly increased forest fuel loads. Along with prolonged drought conditions throughout the American West, catastrophic wildfires that sterilize up to 12 inches of soil become increasingly more frequent.
In response to the infestation and increased fuel loads, the United States Forest Service is green-lighting timber harvest contracts on public lands to remove lodgepole pines trees killed by native mountain pine beetles for sale and export.
