Governors Island Oyster Nursery.
In partnership with Billion Oyster Project, Witness Tree Media created visual stories of the organization’s operations including oyster incubation nurseries and operations on Governors Island in New York Harbor. Oyster larvae are introduced to cleaned oyster shells collected through Billion Oyster Project’s shell collection program. When the larvae attach themselves to the shells they are known as oyster spat. In warmer months the spat are kept in cages submerged in huge aquariums to grow until they’re ready to be transferred to one of Billion Oyster Project’s oyster nursery field stations being installed in key areas throughout New York Harbor.
